Our Favorite Skincare Products by Skin Type

February 24, 2022

Is it just us, or is great skin the new black? Maybe it’s the push for cleaner beauty products [and less makeup, more skincare] or maybe the older we get, the more we care about what exactly we’re putting on our faces. Either way, good skin is in. Here at LIY, we’re trying to be more intentional about consistency in our routines. We’re not professionals [several of us still sleep with our makeup on – it’s a work in progress 😉 ], but we’ll take any improvement as a win. With the LIY Team + several LIY Ambassadors, we’ve got a pretty wide range of skin types covered. So without further ado, here are our favorite skincare products for every skin type!

PS. If you’re curious to know our favorite beauty products [also organized by skin type!], you can check out everything we have in our makeup bags here!

Steph’s Morning Skincare Favorites for Dry Skin

It wasn’t too long ago that my skincare routine was more hit than miss. I’m finally in a place where I’m taking care of my skin and I’m sleeping so much better with a fresh face, and my skin looks and feels so much healthier now that it’s clean and properly hydrated! I’ve tried quite a few products and found that most of what works best for me is Mary Kay products. I’ve linked to my consultant, but of course feel free to support a business of a woman in your local area. Here’s a glimpse at my regular routine:

Hannah’s Skincare Favorites for Combination Skin

I’m embarrassed to even say this, but up until 6 months ago my skincare routine consisted of Cetaphil for face wash and a very light moisturizer because I was afraid anything moisturizing would make me break out….. YIKES. I was, however, consistently washing my face twice a day so that was a bonus! But, let’s just say I’ve come a long way [lol] in the last several months. After noticing my skin was taking a hit from drying it out and not properly taking care of it, I took matters into my own hands! I would say my skin is more combination; oily in my “T” zone and a little more dry everywhere else! I started using Elemis products by introducing a gentle cleanser and eye mask and things escalated from there 😉 Now I have a whole new morning and nighttime routine that I enjoy doing and doesn’t feel like a chore! Here’s my typical routine:

Morning Routine

  • Next, apply two pumps in hands of this serum, and rub on face gently

*If I’m not wearing makeup during the day and my skin is a little more dry, I will apply a little of this face oil for a boost of hydration!*

Evening Routine

  • Then, apply two pumps, in hands, of this serum, and rub on face gently
  • And finally, apply two drops of this face oil in your hands gently pat/press into cheeks, forehead and other areas that are dry!

*Note: A couple times a week I will use this face cupping and toning set, in the evenings, after I apply my face oil and it feels SO SO SO good! Like a face massage with benefits! And when needed, I use the LIY Team’s fave Tinkle Razors to get rid of peach fuzz and dead skin cells!

Claire’s Skincare Favorites for Combination Skin

Some women have dry skin, some have oily skin – I’m lucky enough to have both. 😉 If you too have combination skin, I’ve have great luck with CeraVe skincare products. I love that they’re available at the drugstore and don’t break the bank. I’ve tried more expensive products [like Drunk Elephant] and broke out horribly. So for now, CeraVe it is! In the drier winter months, I prefer the hydrating facial cleanser and in the summer [when I tend to be more oily] I reach for the Foaming Cleanser meant for normal to oily skin. Sun protection is sooo important, so I also recommend the AM daily moisturizer with SPF 30. On days I opt out of wearing makeup, I reach for the Tula Face Filter primer [with a subtle tinted glow!] and a dollop of under eye cream!

Katy’s Skincare Favorites for Combination Skin

MONAT Rewind Age Control Nectar // MONAT Skin Revitalizing Essence // MONAT Be Gentle Creamy Cleanser // MONAT Eye Smooth Eye Cream // MONAT Botanic Bakuchiol // MONAT Hydration Booster Serum // MONAT Sun Veil Sunscreen // Bliss Sunscreen

Katy here! My skin has been a lifelong battle for me….as a teenager I had pretty oily skin and have always struggled with acne (still to this day at 27, thanks hormones). When I was 23 I ended up doing Acutane and that changed my skin quite a bit composition wise, so I would say now I have more combo skin. ALSO, I probably use too many products, but hey we are trying to fight acne, fine lines, and all the other things here 😂 First thing in the morning I use this serum and this moisturizer. They feel so good on the skin and help my makeup go on smoother! A new step that I have added once or twice a day is using this Dermalogica Age Bright Clearing Serum that was recommended by an Esthetician I went to recently. My nighttime routine is a little more extensive. I wash my face with this creamy cleanser (great for sensitive skin) and follow it with this essence (I use my hands to pat it into the skin), My next step is Rewind Age Control Nectar (basically Botox in a bottle) and/or Botanic Bakuchiol (vegan retinol). The bakuchiol makes my skin feel so plump. To finish off my evening skincare routine I apply this moisturizer, it’s so thick and feels amazingggg and my eye cream (using my ring finger)! As far as the MONAT products go, I have my own account but feel free to find a consultant in your friend group or area to support! They have truly been great for my skin! Lip Care is also very important to me in my routine. I pretty much apply something first thing in the morning and right before bed to get those babies moisturized. This lip therapy feels great on and it’s a go-to before sleep! This MAC Lip Therapy is also a favorite to apply throughout the day. It looks like a pretty gloss but really moisturizes and smells so good. For sunscreen (I sometimes forget this step in colder months, oops) I alternate between my MONAT Sun Veil and Bliss Tinted Sunscreen. Both are lightweight and non greasy!

Becca’s Favorites for Dry Skin

My skincare routine is fairly simple, but it is focused on using the best products to help my excessively dry skin! Honest Beauty Deep Hydration Moisturizer is the best I have ever used for keeping my face from getting dry! I believe a good scrub can do miracles for dry skin, so  I use a Clinique scrub for my face and I swear by Kopari Coconut Crush Scrub for my body. As far as body creams go, this one has helped my bumpy arms and eczema almost disappear entirely this winter. To seal in all the moisture, I use L’Occitane Shower Oil in the shower and this almond oil after using lotion on extra dry days! Oh, and as a contact wearer, I love using micellar water to easily remove my waterproof eye makeup without any oiliness getting into my eyes.

glowoasis milkdew pH balancing moisture milk toner // Gleamin Vitamin C Clay Mask // Skinfood Peach Sake Emulsion

Is anyone else battling dry, dull skin this winter? I have been since the air has gotten dryer & colder!  I first received this toner in my monthly beauty subscription box and instantly loved the vegan, gentle ingredients. After using it for the first time, my skin felt soothed and calmed from the abuse of the elements. Dare I say, glowing??? I liked it so much that I ordered a replacement bottle once the other ran out. I’m planning to try more from the line soon!

I decided to check out this mask (thanks to FB marketing) because it claims to help fade dark spots with its superfood formula. My teenage daughter has some hyperpigmentation from acne so I thought she could benefit and I would also like a more even complexion. Let me tell you! It goes on so smooth (comes with a cute little application brush) & felt great on my skin. When I rinsed the first word out of my mouth was “WOW!”. My skin was glowing in the best way possible. I ordered my daughter the moisturizer as well & she reports her skin feeling soft and nourished. I will definitely keep this as a part of our regimen from now on!

This has been my go to moisturizer for a couple years now. I love that it is light and non greasy on my combination skin. In the past, Sometimes I was super oily. Sometimes I had dry patches.  I have used several products from this company and been pleased with all of them. The Peach Sake collection has seriously helped my skin maintain more balance long term and I think I’m hooked for life! Or until my needs change. This weird over 30 under 45 time has me like 🤔

Debbie’s Favorites

I have very dry skin all year round!  I use a variety of brands mainly focusing on glycolic acid and prescription retinol.  To wash my face I like to use Neutrogena Hydro Boost.  It’s fragrance free, contains hyaluronic acid and removes my makeup too. Afterwards I alternate using prescription retinol and glycolic acid. My favorite glycolic acid is by LaRoche-Posay because it smooths and brightens my skin and comes at a good price from Amazon! Next I like to use Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil. This I use morning and night. Leaves my face feeling moisturized but not greasy and works well under my makeup too. Lastly I use sunscreen by Meow Meow Tweet. I love this sunscreen because it’s reef-safe and contains non nano zinc oxide. Sunscreen is a must every day but especially when using glycolic acid and retinol which make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Lisa’s Favorites

Morning Routine: ZO Exfoliating Cleanser // ZO Oil Control Pads (cut in half; swipe face) // Osea Atmosphere Protection Cream // Hanskin Vitamin C Glow Serum

Evening Routine: ZO Hydrating Cleanser // ZO Calming Toner (I put this in a small travel spray bottle rather than use a cotton pad) // Osea Atmosphere Protection Cream // ZO Brightening Retinol // LashFood Lash Enhancing Serum

Once a week: ZO Exfoliating Polish // Klaris Vitamin E mask

I struggled for years trying to find a good balance for my combination skin. One year ago I decided to see an esthetician as a local spa was offering a facial special. Of course, like a good esthetician, she encouraged me to buy products from the spa but it was going to be incredibly expensive.I started buying products slowly and swapping out what I was using. I started with the face wash, then a moisturizer, then the toner, and now I’ve added retinol to my skin regimen. I have made it budget friendly and affordable for me by buying smaller sizes (because a little bit goes a long way!) – I take advantage of any sales & shipping specials, and by using these products I have the best skin I have ever had in my entire life!

Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost line quickly became a staple in my bathroom and by the pool in the warmer months! The amount of moisture it gives my body is amazing! It goes on super smooth, smells fabulous, and lasts for all day moisture! I highly recommend any product from their Hydro Boost line! For eye cream, this is my favorite. I’ve been using it for 20+ years and swear by it! It smooths fine lines and Diminishes swollen eyes. I love this stuff!

Heather’s Favorites

I have a few Tula items and I’m so happy with them. The Cooling & Brightening Eye Balm works so well to refresh my tired eyes! I actually bought a second one I leave by my desk when I’m having Zoom fatigue during the workday! With my second order I grabbed a Lip Treatment Balm which I’m loving the faint color and hydration for my dry lips. I noticed they now have a trio which would make 2 great gifts and 1 to keep.

Sthefany’s Favorites
