Welcome To New York (It’s Been Waiting for You)

April 1, 2020

New York City is a magical place filled with history, tourism, and dreamers. It’s also incredibly crowded (AKA the city with the largest population in the USA), but walking around there’s a certain buzz in the air that makes you realize why so many people move there and why it’s the city that never sleeps! Somehow a lot of my friends from high school (see my Jonesboro, AR hometown blog post) ended up in NYC. They came to one of my band’s (Maybe April) shows and we hung out on a rooftop after. It was one of the most random but fun nights I’ve ever had! I feel like it was the full New York City experience.

Tourist Attractions:
Statue of Liberty – Experience the beauty and splendor of New York City aboard the Statue of Liberty ferry. Tour the grounds of Liberty Island and take the perfect photo of Lady Liberty.

Empire State Building – I’m sure you’ve heard of this little building before…ride all the way to the top for an incredible view of the city!

Central Park – I love walking around Central Park! It’s a beautiful piece of nature in the nation’s most crowded city. There are so many attractions within the park such as Strawberry Fields, Loeb Boathouse on The Lake, and Belvedere Castle.

Museum of Natural History – The American Museum of Natural History, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City, is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. There are SO many incredible artifacts here, including Dorothy’s shoes from the Wizard of Oz!

Rockefeller Center –  a national historic landmark in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. You’ll find that summer is a great time of year to explore all the shopping, dining, and activities this inspiring location has to offer

Entertainment:
Broadway – This is the best of the best!! Seeing a Broadway show is such a fun experience! If you’ve never done it, and even if you’re not a huge theater person, I still recommend doing it at least once in your life.

Comedy Clubs – The best comedians in the world are here! You can check out an established theater with a big name headliner, but I also recommend going to a hole in the wall comedy club to see aspiring comedians try out their new material. I have toured in NYC the past few years and the last time my bandmate and I stumbled across an Improv show for $10 – it was so much fun!!

Rockwood Music Hall – this is where I usually play shows while in NYC! It’s a true music club. There’s usually shows going on at all three stages so check out who you think you’d enjoy to see live & enjoy! (no food here, drinks only)

City Winery NYC – I have also played a show here! This is a relaxed setting to enjoy music, good food, and great wine!

Food:
Honestly, you could probably spend a lifetime and never eat at all for the amazing restaurants in NYC! You really can’t go wrong. From Chinatown, to Little Italy, to Chelsea..the possibilities are endless! For that reason I’m going to link a first timer’s guide to eating in New York here.

Joe’s Pizza – You want a classic, amazing, slice of authentic New York pizza? Go to Joe’s! There probably will be a line, but it’s worth it!

Magnolia Bakery – mmmm where are my fellow dessert lovers at?! This bakery has super yummy sweet treats and baked goods!

Tavern On the Green – located in Central Park, this restaurant has a beautiful setting with amazing food. You basically feel like you’re in a romantic comedy.

Katz’s Delicatessen – This place was started in 1888, so you know it’s good. My husband has been ONE place in New York and this is it. On a road trip we actually stopped in NYC specifically for lunch at this spot. Your first time, this place will seem pretty confusing, but feel free to ask the guy at the door what to do….and don’t lose your ticket (you’ll know what I mean once you’re there).
