I’ve always supported the whole matchy-matchy trend. For instance, I had no qualms about wearing my Michael Jordan jersey with a Michael Jordan hat while in elementary school or wearing a matching cow print shirt, shorts AND socks as a young child. You could say that style has always been in my blood 😉 When I started to notice that monochromatic [a fancy word for “matchy”] outfits were making a strong statement for spring and summer, I jumped on that boat and deemed myself Captain in three seconds flat. I love the trend so much that we incorporated several color-ways for the chance to match in our recent Gibson x Living in Yellow collection at Nordstrom. Whether you’re a lover of yellow, prefer to be sassy and chic in white, speak navy as your love language or turn to classic black whenever you get a chance, today’s post has a variety of monochromatic outfits [by color] that will have you trending for spring and summer in no time!
It’s no secret that I’m a huge shopper and lover of Nordstrom. I spend more time browsing their online new arrivals than I do telling my dogs to stop licking me [and believe me, I say it a lot]. If they would just stop carrying such cute items that I N-E-E-D my life would be a lot…well, a lot more boring. You can’t beat their free shipping and easy free returns and Double Points Days? Watch out world, my credit card is coming through. Needless to say, all of today’s looks are head-to-toe from Nordstrom which makes it even easier to replicate the monochromatic looks you’ll see before.
Before we jump in – just a few words on this whole monochromatic trend. My first piece of advice: don’t be afraid to try it. For some reason wearing a top that matches perfectly to the bottoms can be intimidating, but what I’ve found is that when I actually put it on I feel more confident than ever. Feel free to play up the combos even more by adding the same color of shoes and/or jewelry. If that feels like too much, you can break up the matching look with a different color of shoes or a pop of a different color in your earrings. Play around with it and have fun! That is what fashion is supposed to be after all!
Yellow
First up – the color that this blog was founded on, yellow. We all know that I love it [and live in it ;)] and thankfully, the trend spotters agree with us as yellow is ranking HIGH on the hottest colors for summer list. It’s about time people. Whether it’s shades of lemonade, mustard or soft butter tones, this is the ultimate F-U-N combo to play around with! Here are three different outfit ideas to take yellow and color yourself all over with it!
Navy
If yellow is a little too bold for you, you can take it down a notch with navy. I will forever be a huge fan of this hue and love how great it looks when paired together. Navy has a tendency to scream summer to me [maybe it’s the nautical vibes it can give off] but whatever it is, I hope this color is here to stay [spoiler alert: I believe it is].
White
Fierce. That’s the first word that comes to mind when I see white on white on white. This is probably the most intimidating combination to try [risky for sure – THE DIRT] but you know what they say — no risk, no reward. And believe me friends, the award is HUGE when it all comes together and works. Whether you’re a bride to be or simply want to make a powerful statement, these looks are for you.
Black
Last but certainly not least, the tried and true black on black. We all know that black wins for its slimming qualities, but it should also win for it’s simple way to make every outfit look chic and pulled together. This is a great opportunity to add in a pop or color should you decide! Here are three looks that any of us can pull off!
How are you feeling about the monochromatic trend? Which color[s] would you be most excited to pair together? If I can do it, you can do it too. Believe me. Signed, the diary of a Michael Jordan jersey wearer.
