I don’t know if you’re starting to feel like me at all, but skinny jeans are beginning to lose a little bit of their luster when I go to get dressed these days. Now hear me out — will they most likely always be in my regular wardrobe rotation and what I wear 5/7 days of the week? Absolutely. But am I starting to wonder what else is out there in the great wide world of denim? Perhaps. Insert Express. They are killing it in the denim game when it comes to different styles to try. From the flares we dreamt about as teens, to cropped styles to the new and improved take on mom jeans, there’s something for everybody there. And don’t worry, if you’re a skinny jean girl through and through – they have a lot of those too.
Today I thought it’d be fun to share a few different styles that I’m dipping my legs into so to speak. If there’s one thing that is for sure, all of these styles brought a new level of confidence my way. There’s just something about switching up your normal routine and look that can do a number on your “hey I know what I’m doing getting dressed” mojo.
Let’s take a walk down the not-so-skinny denim trends I’m loving right now…
Flare Jeans
High Waisted Hyper Stretch Slim Flare Jeans [true to size, wearing in regular length for 5’4] // Satin Scalloped Top [true to size, wearing in small] // Express Crocodile Texture Heeled Sandals [true to size]
If this doesn’t bring a touch of nostalgia I don’t know what does. Can we talk for a minute about why flare jeans disappeared from the jean scene for a little while?! I will argue with the best of them that flare jeans are hands down the most flattering when it comes to elongating the legs and making even us 5’4 shorties look 6’0 tall. I love that this style works for my height but know that if you prefer a longer inseam, these are an awesome option! My favorite way to style flare jeans is with heels to add extra elongation to your legs and to prevent your jeans from dragging on the ground.
Straight Cropped Jeans
Express Flying Monkey Mid Rise Straight Cropped Jeans [true to size, wearing in 4 short] // Ribbed Square Neck Puff Sleeve Top [size up, wearing in small] // Side Slit Metal Heel Snakeskin Booties [true to size]
I’d be lying if I said these didn’t frighten me a little by just seeing them on the website. Am I cool enough to wear straight cropped jeans? How in the world do you style these? Here’s the deal – they are easier than you think. Whether you rock them with your favorite pair of booties [you can rock ’em with a shorter shaft bootie like you see here or wear them with a bootie that’s taller which can go under the jeans]. If booties aren’t your thing, heels, mules or even flats can work perfectly with this style. These are looser through the leg and are extremely comfortable. If you’re looking for a style of denim that can transition perfectly into spring, these are the ticket.
Mom Jeans
Super High Waisted Original Ripped Mom Jeans [true to size, wearing in 4 short] // Ruffle Mock Neck Top [true to size, wearing in small] // Express Crocodile Texture Heeled Sandals [true to size]
Last but not least, a style I have never tried before and was also equally as nervous to get my legs into. Mom jeans: previous thought — only moms can wear these. New thought: moms are super women and well I kinda want to be a super woman so mom jeans are for me. These are high waisted, looser in the leg and typically longer in the butt area. I loved the look of these with the distressing which gave them an edge and well, some days you just need edge. While you will commonly see mom jeans styled with sneakers, I prefer them with heels to give my legs and butt a lift as this style can tend to make you a little flatter on the back side.
So there we have it: three not-so-skinny jeans I can stand behind [or better yet, inside of ;)]. Are you into breaking out of the skinny jean mold?! If so, which styles are you gravitating towards?! Be sure to check out Express. for tried and true styles you know, love and trust and for new, upcoming and trendy styles to try! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed as you stroll down the street in jeans that make you feel like the woman you were made to be…
