LIY For Your Guy // Round 2

February 24, 2020

By:

Erin Schrader

Ask and you shall receive- we brought the men of LIY back for round two! The guys are here to bring  you a roundup of what they’ve been buying and loving lately! Apparently the unofficial theme of February was athleisure, which is a category we know we can get behind! See what the guys found, and hear what they had to say about everything! And if you missed the first round of LIY For Your Guy, you can see what the guys found here!

Shawn [Erin’s Husband]

Amazon Goodthreads Shirt [true to size, wearing in medium] // Hurley Dri-Fit Shorts [true to size] // Swims Shoes [size down one]

This Amazon Goodthreads brand is one I’m learning to like quite a bit. I’ve got a number of shirts from them now, and the sizing, style and price point offer a pretty good value. My button-up shirt sizes range between small (often too small) and medium (arms are usually too long) and this slim fit medium is much better than most. For $21 and some change, this is a good shirt. These Hurley Dri-FIT shorts I originally purchased during one of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sales a few years back, and they are my favorite without a doubt. They fit well with my true size, and absolutely never need ironed. Some of the chino style shorts I’ve purchased have wrinkled just by looking at them, and I can confirm that after many years of ownership (and owning multiple colors) I’ve never needed to iron these. Just fold them and be done. Dress them up with that nice Goodthreads button-up, or wear a T-Shirt and either way, one will not be disappointed. Now onto the shoes, Swims are my go-to summer shoe. They’re a bit on the pricey side, but there are many styles and most are made for wearing near the water. Wear them to the pool, beach, dinner, whatever you want. They’re mesh on top, and have mesh slits on the bottom which make them very breathable and comfortable. I do size down a whole size as they seem to run large.

Matt [Becca’s Husband]

Striped Cuff Tee [True to Size, wearing in Medium Tall, White] // Twill Joggers [True to Size, wearing in Medium, Black] // Adidas Sneakers [True to Size, wearing in 12, White/Black/Taupe]

I wear a suit all week for work, so when I get to the weekend, I want to wear something comfortable. This outfit is comfortable and good for running errands, going to the bar, and all the basic weekend stuff. This t-shirt is simple, but the striped collar and cuffs add a little something. I can tell it is good quality because it’s made of a thicker material but also comfortable. As a tall guy, I find that most shirts I buy will shrink up and become too short after a few washes, so I like that this shirt was available in Tall sizing so I know it will still fit after washing. The joggers are made of a khaki type material, but they are comfortable. And I like that the shoes are comfortable, classic and will go with a lot of things in my closet.

Logan M [Cassidy’s Husband]

New Balance Quilted Pullover [TTS wearing medium / Black] // New Balance Fleece Joggers [TTS wearing medium / Black] // Slim Straight Leg Mavi Jeans [TTS wearing 31/30]

My wife tells me that it is a trend to be in a head-to-toe branded outfit, but really I just love New Balance’s activewear, but hey apparently I am doing something right! This New Balance get up is my newest go-to lounge wear. This pullover was just what I was looking for–something that feels like a sweatshirt but looks a little more put together. It was easy to just throw on a pair of jeans with this pullover and head out the door for a casual date night. I am also an avid cyclist and after every workout I want to put on something comfortable–these joggers are the first thing I grab!

Eric [Lauren’s Husband]

Gap Marled Henley [TTS, wearing medium / Blue Navy Colorblock] // JCrew Slim Fleece Sweatpants [TTS, wearing medium / Heather Grey] // Mavi Jake Slim Fit Jeans [TTS] // Chuck Taylor All Star 70 High Top  // Cole Haan Original Grand Wing Tip Derby Shoes [TTS]

When it comes to clothing, I gravitate towards items that are versatile, comfortable, and altogether confidence inspiring – Clothes that can be dressed up, or dressed down. These items check all the boxes, and do it well. First off, the henley. It is comfortable enough to lounge around the house on a Saturday morning, or versatile enough to dress up with a pair of jeans or slacks for the casual work day. Sizing seems true to fit for my athletic build. The JCrew Factory joggers also make for a comfortable lounging option or potentially dressing up with a casual button up for brunch.

JCrew Performance Half-Zip Pullover [TTS, wearing medium / Deep Midnight] // JCrew Slim Fit Flex Chino [TTS / Overcast Blue]  // JCrew Slim Washed Jersey Tee [TTS, wearing medium / White] // Cole Haan Original Grand Wing Tip Derby Shoes [TTS]

These JCrew Factory pants are an athletic fit chino, but are also made with a material that incorporates some stretch, which makes them a rival in comfort to sweatpants. As for the quarter zip, it is extremely soft. Not exactly what I was expecting when I first ordered them, but a pleasant surprise! Lastly, the white tee. I feel as though a good basic tee is a great staple to have, and this option sets the bar with fit and feel. Finally, if you’re looking for shoes that’ll work for being on your feet all day, I can’t recommend these Cole Haans enough. I wear these for several days in a row of working RV shows, and they are basically tennis shoes on the bottom, dress shoes on the top! They’re great!

Logan C [Hannah’s Husband]

Sweater [true to size, wearing in XL in Smoke Heather] // Jeans [True to Size] // Boots [True to Size] // Jacket [True to size, wearing in XL]

Hello again, Logan here (Hannah’s husband) and I’m ready for round two of LIY for Your Guy!  Last time we were challenged to find a blazer or sport coat that fit my build better than the typical jacket would. I struggle with jackets being tight in the shoulders and arms, so I size up, only to have the rest of the jacket be huge! Even though I don’t get to dress up very often, I do enjoy it. We came across this jacket and I immediately liked the way it looked. The classy style, textured feel, and a stand-up collar made this jacket really stand out to me. It fit really well in the arms and shoulders, too. That was a win. The gray sweater is actually one of the best fitting sweaters I have ever had. Not a very thick material, soft, and form fitting made this sweater a new “go-to” for a night out or a Sunday morning at church. The boots are something new to me. These mid-height black leather pull-on boots are comfortable and dressy.

Dave [Steph’s Husband]

The North Face Reaxion Graphic Long-Sleeve T-Shirt [true to size for a looser fit, size down for a fitted look, wearing in L in Tnf Black] // Reserve Collection Jeans [true to size]// Adidas Seeley Skate Shoe [true to size, wearing in Grey Five-Collegiate Navy-Footwear White]

If you couldn’t tell by my last post, there are two primary things I look for when buying clothes:  comfort (nothing too tight/restrictive) and flexibility (can I wear it to work, out with friends or in this case perhaps while I’m exercising). The North Face long sleeve shirt is extremely comfortable and light-weight.  I could wear it with a pair of jeans while hanging out with friends, but I also would feel comfortable playing in my weekly recreational tennis league.  As I mentioned earlier, I like my shirts to be loose fitting and this was perfect for me. If you are someone who likes your shirts to be tighter, then I would size down.

adidas A284 Brushed Terry Heather Quarter-Zip [true to size, wearing in L in Navy Heather] // Reserve Collection Jeans [true to size] // Adidas Seeley Skate Shoe [true to size, wearing in Grey Five-Collegiate Navy-Footwear White]

The next item I went with is the Adidas quarter-zip pullover.  Once again, a very comfortable, light-weight item that I can wear playing golf on a mild temperature day or pair with a pair of chinos at work on a casual Friday.  I decided to also purchase a pair of Adidas shoes to go along with the quarter-zip. Ever since I can remember I was someone who wanted to look like I had a sponsor deal with Adidas. Clearly, I was never good enough at any sport to get a deal with them, so buying my own matching stuff was my only option.  The first time I wore these shoes, I was immediately given a compliment on them by a coworker.  However, the best part was that the second time I wore them was for a work event that I was on my feet most of the day and I can honestly say my feet felt great afterwards.  Typically, with a new pair of shoes you would want to break them in slowly before wearing them for an all day event like that, but there was no break in period with these.
