As much as I love shorts season [aka summer] I sometimes despise the actual “denim shorts season” itself. Shorts can be tricky. Sometimes they are too tight, too short, too loose and the list of all of the discomforts of shorts goes on. Today, we’re here to put some of those discomforts to rest and bring you the shorts we really recommend for the season. To make it even more clear, we’re bringing you shorts by inseam lengths and on three different bodies! You can see how they look on somebody who is 5’2 up to 6’0! We’re bringing you sizes ranging from 0-14 so you can get a full picture of how these shorts look on every body. Our ultimate goal is to get you into shorts that you’ll love and feel confident in all summer long. Introducing, the shorts we’d be okay [or dare I even say, thrilled] rocking all season long….
3-4 inch inseam favorites:
- J.Crew Factory highest-rise cutoff boy short – 3 inch inseam [true to size]
When it comes to shorts with a 3-inch inseam, this pair from J.Crew Factory shouldn’t be missed! We all felt that these were absolutely one of our favorite pairs [and believe me, we tried many]! Not only are they high waisted which keep things sucked in, they aren’t tight around the thigh which is a double bonus. While they are 3-inches, they look very appropriate on somebody with height! If you’re looking for a pair of cut off shorts that won’t break the bank and bring a smile to your face, these are it my friends.
Two out of the three of us deemed this pair from Old Navy our all-time favorite from the lineup of shorts. That’s pretty great considering they are under $35 and seem to always be on sale. We loved that the cuff was stitched, had slight distressing and that same high rise we’ve grown to love. All of us would buy this pair!
3. Liverpool Vickie Welt Pocket Denim Shorts – 4 inch inseam [true to size]
Liverpool does it again. These 4-inch inseam shorts are a great length if you’re trying to expose some but not bare all. They have a great stretch to them and are quite comfortable. If you are a pear body shape [embrace the booty] and struggle with finding shorts that fit both your hips and waist, these are a great option as that dreaded waist gap wasn’t there with these but rather fit like a glove!
4. KUT from the Kloth Gidget Denim Shorts – 4 inch inseam [true to size]
If you’ve followed for awhile, you know that these Kut from the Kloth are a constant go-to. While we didn’t like them as much as the similar [and less expensive] J.Crew Factory version, these are great as I know the quality is there. I’ve owned them for two years with no issues. These are more of a mid to low rise, so if you don’t like a high rise short, these could be your best friend!
Honorable Mentions [While we didn’t L-O-V-E these, they still turned out to be decent options to consider if the above didn’t strike your fancy]!
While I personally really liked this pair of shorts, the other two didn’t love them as much. They do offer good stretch, however, they are tighter in the thighs than some of the others that we tried. The cuff is stitched which is a nice trait to avoid awkward washing machine side effects.
2. Silver Jeans Denim Boyfriend Shorts – 4 inch inseam [size down]
I really like the front of these shorts, but I think what threw us a little bit was the S across the butt which took us back to our middle and high school days. Speaking of the butt region, Hannah noted that she felt it had a saggy back half which nobody wants. Sorry saggy butt, you’re not welcome here.
These shorts are the ultimate in stretch. Our biggest downfall? The color. None of us loved the shade of blue that they were came in [too dark? too blue? we weren’t sure what it was but it just didn’t resonate]. Hannah did note that she didn’t love the waistline due to just how stretchy they really were. If you’re looking for a pair of shorts for under $20, they could be an option for you, but ultimately, not for us!
5-inch inseam favorites:
We didn’t have many 5-inch options to compare to, which is why these made the list. Let me explain. The fit is great – especially for pear body shapes. They have a great high rise with a good stretch and they fit both the hips and waist well [no back gap here!] however, we weren’t sure if we could get excited about how they look. Imagine a weed wacker runs into your jeans, this is what you get.
6-inch inseam + favorites:
While none of us are bermuda shorts wearers, these would be our favorite option if so! We liked the stretch and high rise that these bad boys had to offer along with their comfort level. These are a nice length at 6 1/2 inches if you are trying to hide more of that leg [although we say, show it off girlfriend]!
Whoa nelly, now we’re getting into the long ones. The 9-inchers we’ll call them for practicality and logistic purposes. These do have a great stretch and fit [look at those voluptuous booties] and we really did like the look of them overall. If you are petite, you may want to steer clear of these as the line between shorts and capris gets quite blurry.
And that concludes today’s short story. Hopefully you found this helpful and has eliminated the nagging question of “what shorts am I going to try this year!?” Do you have other posts you’d love to see like this? Let us know and we’ll start planning! See all other product comparison posts here!
