New Arrivals Hits & Misses [Amazon, L.L. Bean + More!]

September 15, 2018

It’s been a few weeks since the last round of Hits & Misses and believe me, there are some GOOD things to share this week [good = hilarious]. I’m excited to be adding in some new retailers to the mix and am loving these posts as it’s a fun journey to get me to try different retailers than I typically do. This week I’m bringing you new arrivals from Amazon, Nordstrom and LL Bean. One retailer I shop constantly, one I’ve just started shopping over the past month and one I just purchased from for the first time ever. Below you’ll find out which is which.

Before we dive in, let’s get the logistics out of the way to make this process easier on you! For sizing reference, I am 5’4, 125 lbs on a good day, typically a 2 in tops/dresses and 26 in jeans/pants with a preferred inseam of 26-28 inches. Bra size is 30DDD [I get it from my momma]. Hopefully, this helps when determining what size you’d need. Also, feel free to follow along here for daily outfits and check out this Pinterest board where you can also get some ideas! Which reminds me, you can pin any of these looks below to save for future reference! Simply click on the links below and you will be taken directly to the retailer where you can shop! Alright, fellow “I like to get dressed” friends, let’s begin!

ps. You can see ALL previous hits & misses blog posts in one easy spot now!

Amazon

This was my third time shopping Amazon fashion as I’ve always been a little bit hesitant and afraid of what the quality and fit of the items would be. After round one, I wanted to go back for more because I’m learning that the more brands you try, the quicker you will learn which products are good quality and worth purchasing more of. The prices on Amazon are awesome and thanks to Prime the shipping is FAST and FREE and thanks again to Prime, returns are super simple and free as well! I’m excited to keep ordering from Amazon to see which items make the cut and which don’t. Here’s this weeks lineup:

HIT: Core 10 Tech-Fleece Bomber Jacket Core 10 Tech-Fleece Bomber Jacket [size up if in between, wearing in small] // Similar tank // Core 10 High Waist Full-Length Leggings [true to size, wearing in XS] // adidas Swift Run Sneaker [true to size]

Verdict: I couldn’t love this jacket more. Not saying that I will wear it to workout because that would require working out, but I will absolutely wear it when running errands, traveling, etc. It’s great quality and a nice weight. Tip when shopping on Amazon – if you’re nervous about the quality of the items you’ll receive, turn to the Amazon owned fashion brandsCore 10, Daily Ritual, Mae, and more! I’ve quickly learned that these brands are reliable and good quality as opposed to some of the random one off brands you see.

Fit Tips: Size up if in between, as it is a little on the small side. I am wearing here in size small.

HIT: Core 10 High Waist Full-Length LeggingsCore 10 High Waist Full-Length Leggings  [true to size, wearing in XS] // adidas Swift Run Sneaker [true to size]

Verdict: OH MY WORD. I may have just found my new favorite pair of leggings I’ve ever owned. If you’ve been following along for awhile, you know I am a huge Zella legging person so when I heard good things about this pair on Amazon, I knew I had to see how they compared. They are soft as butter, so smooth, don’t have an outside seam which makes them great for pairing with everyday sweaters and tunics and fit like a charm. High waist and well worth every dollar. I am anxious to wear these for a period of time and see how the quality holds up.

Fit Tips: True to size, wearing in XS

HIT: Apperloth Faux Suede Jacket Apperloth Faux Suede Jacket [true to size, wearing in small] // tank [true to size, wearing in XS] // Aeo AE Ne(X)t Level Jegging [size up if in between, wearing in short for 5’4] // Marc Fisher Leave Bootie [true to size]

Verdict: A shockingly great win! This faux suede jacket feels so good on and the quality is much better than many of the pieces I’ve received on Amazon! I wore this to dinner last night and it looked adorable! I’m tempted to buy the other colors that this comes in as it’s a great inexpensive version for fall.

Fit Tips: True to size, wearing in small.

HIT: Daily Ritual Jersey Beateau Neck Long Sleeve Tee Daily Ritual Jersey Bateau Neck Long Sleeve Tee [size up, wearing in small] // KUT from the Kloth Donna High Waist Skinny Ankle Jeans [true to size] // Edie Smoking Slipper Flat [true to size]

Verdict: I’m always looking for great basics especially for fall and winter for layering purposes, so when I saw this set of 2 tees for only $22 I knew I had to try them. They are the softest jersey material and a great length if pairing with open sweaters with leggings. I love the bateau neck style and that you can still wear a regular bra and not have the straps show.

Fit Tips: Size up, I am wearing in small and it is still pretty fitted.

MISS: Imily Bela Chunky Turtleneck SweaterImily Bela Chunky Turtleneck Sweater // Express Camo Pants [true to size]

Verdict: WOOF. This has to be one of the most hysterical purchases I’ve made in a long time. The comments on this Facebook post had me rolling when I shared this. I don’t even know what to say other than clearly this isn’t the same sweater they are advertising online [pretty confident it’s a stolen image from a boutique]. Whatever you do, spare yourself the trauma of what you’ll see in the mirror should you order this and forego this sweater.

Fit Tips: Is it even relevant to tell you this? If you must buy this [DON’T] size up at least two sizes. Or maybe 100.

MISS: Astylish Colorblock TunicAstylish Colorblock Tunic [true to size, wearing in small] // Aeo AE Ne(X)t Level Jegging [size up if in between, wearing in short for 5’4] // Marc Fisher Leave Bootie [true to size]

Verdict: This is another example of a piece that looked quite cozy and cute online and then in person was a stiff, rougher material with less shape than photographed. I am not a fan of how this hangs nor how it felt on. This is a miss for me!

Fit Tips: True to size, wearing in small. It is a little bit of a boxy fit so you may want to consider sizing down.

Nordstrom

Oh Nordstrom, how I shop with you WAY too often. They just make it way too easy. Between the free shipping, free returns, excellent customer service and insane amount of inventory that feels and fits great. While we don’t have a Nordstrom near, shopping online is a breeze and I will forever be a Nordy girl. Fun fact: we have our second Gibson x Living in Yellow collection, launching at Nordstrom on October 29th! I often have way more hits than misses from here which is why I thought it’d be fun to showcase here.

HIT: Caslon Asymmetrical Drape Front Jacket Caslon Asymmetrical Drape Front Jacket [size down, wearing in XS] // Halogen(R) Modal Jersey V-Neck Tee [size down, wearing in XS] // Wit & Wisdom Ab-solution Skinny Jeans [size down] // adidas Swift Run Sneaker [true to size]

Verdict: When you take fleece and a cute cut, it’s a win in my book. This drape front jacket is a great option for those of you standing on the sidelines Saturday morning or are looking for something comfortable to spend your evenings in.

Fit Tips: This does run large so I would suggest sizing down. I am wearing here in XS.

HIT: Leith Belted JacketLeith Belted Jacket [true to size, wearing in XS] // J.Crew Factory Scalloped cami top [true to size] // Wit & Wisdom Ab-solution Skinny Jeans [size down] // Stella & Dot Necklace // Sam Edelman Hazel Pointy Toe Pump [true to size]

Verdict: I absolutely love ivory for fall and winter so when I saw this blazer I knew I wanted to try it. I love the length of this jacket along with the slight sheen it has. A great piece for the boardroom or the bar.

Fit Tips: While I am wearing this in XS, I would prefer it in small as it is a little tight across the chest for me. If busty, I would size up if in between. You can wear this with the belt tied, untied, or tied in the back.

HIT: BP. Faux Leather Foldover Tassel Crossbody Bag BP. Faux Leather Foldover Tassel Crossbody Bag // J.Crew Factory Ruffle-sleeve dress [size down, wearing in XS]

Verdict: Crossbody bags are my favorite type of bags to carry. I purchased this one a couple of years ago and have loved using it so when I saw this new arrival come through, I wanted to try it. The gold grommet detail, foldover zipper closure and ample space to carry everything I would need makes this a win for me! Easy to dress up and down!

L.L. Bean

This was my first time shopping at L.L. Bean and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Since when did their products get SO stinkin’ cute and their quality – incredible! I am so glad that I made my first purchase and can’t wait to keep shopping there. I love that they run sales often and that there is SO much to choose from. I can foresee myself picking up many sweaters and plaids from there this fall and winter.

HIT: Drapey Button-Front ShirtDrapey Button-Front Shirt [true to size, wearing in XS] // KUT from the Kloth Donna High Waist Skinny Ankle Jeans [true to size] // Lyriq Heeled Ankle Bootie [true to size]

Verdict: The colors on this hooked me in instantly. Nothing screams fall more than this color combo and I’m not the least bit mad about it. The fabric is a high quality rayon material and is super soft. You can wear this several ways, tucked a couple of different ways, tied or untucked. But really though, the colors….

Fit Tips: I would order true to size. I am wearing in XS and while it does fit, I would almost prefer in small.

HIT: L.L.Bean Quilted Quarter-Zip PulloverL.L.Bean Quilted Quarter-Zip Pullover [true to size, wearing in XS] //KUT from the Kloth Donna High Waist Skinny Ankle Jeans [true to size] // Lyriq Heeled Ankle Bootie [true to size]

Verdict: HUGE win! I am a big fan of the Patagonia quilted pullovers and these look nearly identical with the same quality but are over half the price. I am so tempted to buy every color now. I love that it has a front pocket unlike the Patagonia pullovers and the little leather detail on the zipper.

Fit Tips: True to size, wearing in XS. If you prefer a looser fit, you may want to size up if in between.

HIT: Signature Mock Neck Waffle TunicSignature Mock Neck Waffle Tunic [true to size, wearing in XS] // Treasure & Bond Legacy Crop Skinny Jeans [true to size] // Women’s Bp. Faren Bootie [true to size]

Verdict: Waffle knit for the win. I have become obsessed with this material and was so excited to see that they had several options in this fabric. This tunic is perfect for leggings and the zipper detail adds a touch of fun. You can wear it fully zipped or unzip a little for some added flare.

Fit Tips: True to size, wearing in XS.

MISS: L.L.Bean Signature Cotton Fisherman Tunic SweaterL.L.Bean Signature Cotton Fisherman Tunic Sweater [true to size, wearing in XS] // Treasure & Bond Legacy Crop Skinny Jeans [true to size] // Edie Smoking Slipper Flat [true to size]

Verdict: This sweater was just a tad bit too chunky for my liking. I felt a little bit like I had a suffocating quilt wrapped around me. Not the most flattering piece on me so back it goes.

Fit Tips: True to size, wearing in XS.

And that’s a wrap! Set-up sale alerts for some of those items you want to buy but aren’t ready to hit checkout and you’ll be notified via email as soon as the price drops!

  1. Great round up as always!! Such a great tip on those Amazon owned brands, I had no idea! And loved your face in that turtleneck pic, lol. Totally felt the same with some of those off brands I’ve ordered. Like they all reminded me of the material that all 80’s Halloween costumes were made of. Yikes! And I’ve never shopped LL Bean but will now! I had a way different impression of their style but was clearly wrong. Thanks, girl! And I’m marking my calendar For 10/29!

  2. Susan Schnitzler says:

We are Bean lovers in our house. That 1/4 zip pull over has been in my wardrobe for years as the Patagonia is not in my wheelhouse. lol It washes beautifully too!

  3. Beth says:

I didn’t realize I could set up sale alerts. Do you set them up on each individual sites? Can you give me more information? Thank you. Great post!

  4. Kimberly E says:

I don’t know how, but you make your “misses” look great! I’ve been eyeing a few things from LLBean lately. That pullover looks so cozy!

  5. Julie Grambow says:

Thank you so much for sharing your hits and misses with us! I have been curious about ordering clothing from amazon and look forward to viewing your posts. I love the LL Bean quilted pullover and plan on ordering soon.

  6. Jenn says:

I laughed out loud at the Amazon misses. Always a risk, but SO worth the laugh.

  7. Diane Janowiak says:

I love LLBean! If you’re a flannel shirt kinda girl, you’ll love their Scotch Plaid flannels. These shirts come in regular or fitted styles and the choice of plaids is great. They also wash well. Also come in men’s sizes, too!

  8. Michael says:

Amazon Fashion can be hit or miss (obviously) but I’m a HUGE fan of Daily Ritual from Amazon. It’s usually just the basics I get but they’re beyond comfortable and always fit great, even after washing. KUT from the Kloth is one of my fave brands of denim so I love that they’re available too.

  9. Jennifer Cunningham says:

So I ordered all of the LL Bean items you posted here and a few others. I love your blog, facebook and Instagram and I buy a lot of what you post. My biggest issue is that I can wear a bunch of the tops that you post, but I cannot wear jeans to work. So I was wondering if you could put out some other options to style these tops. It doesn’t have to be super dressy slacks, but what color or style of jegging or jean (not blue jean) that you would wear with these more casual-ish tops. I want to buy them but then struggle what to pair them with for work when I can’t wear regular jeans! Please help!! I know there are several ladies in this same boat as I work with several of them.
