Pattern Mixing in Your Home

Pattern mixing is having a moment. From your closet to your couch, it’s all about mixing prints, textures, and colors in a way that just works.

Hello LIY Community, If you don’t me yet, I’m Cassidy, the Director of Marketing here at Living in Yellow! When I’m not behind the computer screen, you’ll probably find me rearranging throw pillows for the tenth time or convincing myself that yes, my home does need one more rug.

Lately, I’ve been feeling inspired to try my hand at pattern mixing and what better way to share the love than with some fun inspo boards? I put together four mood boards [bedroom, living room, dining room, and additional decor] and included a few tips and tricks that hopefully demonstrate how to mix patterns like a pro! Let’s dive in!

Bedroom

Curtains // Bedding // Sheets // Geometric Throw Pillows // Mustard Throw Pillow // Nightstands // Lamps // Tapestry // Accent Chairs // Burgundy Throw Pillows // Rug

Tip 1: Don’t be afraid to pair bold geometrics with soft florals.

Living Room

Curtains // Light // Artwork // Sofa // Floor Lamp // Side Table // Vase // Ottoman // Tray // Accent Chairs // Geometric Throw Pillows // Embroidered Throw Pillows // Natural Throw Pillow // Round Pouf // Rug

Tip 2: Mix it up with scale! Pairing small, repetitive patterns (like tiny dots or tight grids) with large-scale prints (think oversized florals or big, bold stripes) creates a layered, designer look.

Tip 3: Texture is your friend! Bringing in a variety of textures helps balance patterns in your home.

Dining Room

Chandelier // Artwork // Vase // Greenery // Dining Table // Wood Dining Chairs // Pattern Dining Chairs // Bench // Credenza // Lamps // Photo Frame // Decor Accents // Rug

Tip 4: Let color be your guide! One easy way to make different patterns play nice is to pull a small-scale color from one pattern and repeat it in the next.

Additional Decor

Artwork // Mirror // Decorative Box // Small Dish // Handled Vase // Curtains // Floral Vase // Throw Blanket // Striped Lamp // Green Bowl // Pattern Book // Cloth Napkins // Lumbar Pillow // Photo Frame // Pleated Lamp

Tip 5: Have fun with it! An easy way for your decor to look effortless and high end is to find and purchase items you truly love! Extra points for mixing old [vintage or thrifted pieces] with new!
