The Best Women’s Razors on the Market

September 16, 2021

I think we can all agree that hair removal is one major downfall of womanhood [for those of us who chose to do so!]. And if you chose not to – hey, more power [and more free time] to ya! For those of us who do chose to remove the stubborn hairs from nearly every inch of our bodies, the struggle is REAL. Between shaving, waxing #NeverAgain, and laser removal, our options are limited and pretty dang painful. Here at LIY, we were fed up with the nicks, bumps, and burn left behind by razors, so we decided to take matters into our own hands. Literally – with brand-spankin’ new razors. We tested several of the most popular razors for women over a period of time to find the best women’s razors on the market!

How We Tested

The process was simple, really. Four LIY ladies [with all different leg hair types – yes, we compared] tested EIGHT of the most popular razors on the market over an extended period of time. We made notes of our thoughts on each of them; from a razor burn rating to the longevity of the blade. After giving them all a whirl, we narrowed it down to our Favorite Overall, Best Budget-Friendly Option, and Best Subscription Service. Aside from these top three, we ultimately agreed that all the other products we tried are NOT worth your hard earned dollars. So without further ado, here are our results…

Brands We Tested

The Results

Favorite Overall: Flamingo

Flamingo [Drugstore Brand, $10 / 2 blades]

Four out of four testers agreed: our legs have never felt smoother! This razor did a great job, and continued to do a great job after several shaves! It gave a nice close shave each time, with no razor bumps or burn! We didn’t feel like we needed to shave for several days which was a nice bonus. We also loved that the handle was a bit heavier [more of a sturdy razor], easy to grip, and it’s available in several fun bright colors – which makes every gal happy. It’s a great drugstore go-to [I found these at Target!] that several of us plan to continue using!

Best Drugstore Brand: Gillette Venus

Gillette Venus Platinum [Drugstore Brand, $12]

This seems to be the razor that’s been around for forever, but maybe that’s for good reason! It gave most of us a smooth shave with no razor bumps or razor burn, and we really liked the way the handle felt [nice and sturdy!]. We’ve used it several times and have enjoyed it every time! Cons: We just don’t think the longevity is there that some of the others offer. While you might need to replace this one more often, it’s a great price point and easy to find at your local drugstore in a pinch!

Best Subscription Service: Athena Club

Athena Club [Subscription Service, $12 starter kit with customizable deliveries]

If you prefer the convenience of a subscription service, we’ve gotchu covered! For some of us, this was the closest shave we’ve ever had! We loved the close shave, weight of the razor [sturdy and not slippery!] and shower holder that came with this one. If you’re into the subscription simplicity, sign up Scotty! Beware: We loved this razor for our legs, but if you have sensitive skin elsewhere, it may cause bumps or nicks due to the extremely close shave! Proceed with caution – and lots of shaving cream – friends!

Hair Removal Must-Haves:

Any chance you could tell us what you didn’t like about Billie? I have heard such great things about them and literally JUST purchased it this morning after reading lots of bad reviews of Flamingo so wondering about the differences?! Thank you!!

    • Hey Kari, Claire here! You bet! Erin and some of the other girls who tested the razors actually used the Billie razor regularly before trying these other brands, but it eventually began to cause razor burn and ingrown hairs. For all the hype surrounding the Billie, we liked it, but didn’t love it. I felt like the gel around the razors got gooey over time and that part pretty much disappears quickly and voids that benefit. The gel also left a little bit of residue on our skin. The blades definitely gave a close shave on my legs, but I got razor burn in my armpits. It was a close call for me between the Billie and the Athena for favorite subscription service razor, but the Athena seemed to have me shaving less often! Of course these are just our personal experiences, but I hope it helps you decide! xo

      • Meghan says:

I have Billie and feel I need to shave more often. Not impressed at all and recently cancelled my subscription. I never paid close attention before to how often I shaved but yet when I started using Billie, it was almost everyday. I don’t get the hype personally.

      • TAngelface says:

The Billie was the worst! I loved it at first but got the absolute worst ingrown hairs I’ve ever experienced in my life! I never got the razor burn, but the ingrowns were horrible!

    • Iris says:

I’d agree with Erin. I tried the Billie and it’s the only time I’ve ever had razor burn! After using it only a few times I cancelled my subscription and went back to Venus, but now I’m interested in trying flamingo!
