LIY Reads Book Club & How to Host Your Own

The LIY Virtual Book Club was born in 2020 as a way to connect with you, our LIY Community, and to encourage each other to hit the books– virtually. Our first official meeting was a success [as in, we laughed and sipped wine which is considered a success in my book 😉 ] and we’ve been turning pages together ever since! Since spring of 2020, we’ve been hosting the events virtually via Facebook Live to interact with Y-O-U, chat about the book, and as an excuse to enjoy a few more tall glasses of wine or two. We’re dedicating this space to sharing LIY Book Club reads: past, present, and future. Here you’ll find our previous book club reads, free downloadable discussion questions, links to previous discussions, cocktail suggestions, and book recommendations to add to your to-read list. So if you’re new around here, you can catch up on oldies but goodies. And in case you missed a few, you can host your own virtual book club with your gals pals. Be sure to check back as we’ll continue to update this page as we go… happy reading, friends!

How to Host Your Own Virtual Book Club:

  • Select a Book: Here at LIY, we browse the World Wide Web to find popular new releases and narrow them down to a Top 5 [which sometimes turns into a Top 10 because they all sound SO. GOOD.], then let you, our LIY Community, make the final vote. Either way, narrow down a few favorites or ask your girlfriends to share their to-read list.
  • Select a Discussion Date: Decide on a day and time to “meet” that works for everyone. We typically like to leave about a month of reading time, so plan ahead! It might be a good idea to check in on everyone’s progress and send them a reminder ahead of time so us procrastinators have time to get ‘er done.
  • Read! Easier said than done. Before bed, on slow mornings, rainy days and weekends seem to work best! Book Clubs are a fun way to encourage yourself and others to step up their page-turning game.
  • 3, 2, 1… Discuss! Grab a glass of wine and slip into your comfiest lounge pants. Use Zoom or FaceTime [for iPhone users] to virtually chat with your girlfriends. If you decide to go with one of our previous reads, you’re welcome to download our free discussion questions here. If you select a different book, simply do a quick google search for discussion questions for that title. Chances are, there will be a free download available! You can also find generic discussion questions that will work for most books. Either way, don’t overthink these. The purposes of these questions is simply to get the conversation started!

I found myself with a quiet house this morning for the first time in over a week. I love nothing more than having everyone home together, but my soul needs time alone too. As soon as everyone was off to school, the silence was quickly filled with the rumblings of my not-yet-fed stomach which got […]
