When we think of the term “poncho,” we may still be visualizing the clear, giant trash bag mom and dad used to throw over us in the pouring rain, expecting it to feel like it wasn’t raining on us [note: it was definitely still raining on us]. But over the past several years, ponchos have become a staple in women’s closets from the moment that first leaf hits the ground, taking them all the way through winter. While there are different styles of ponchos out there, today I’m showing you a few different ways to wear the open front style- dressed up for work or an event, and a date night look!
I think what I love most about a poncho is that it’s essentially giving me the green light to have a blanket around me all day or night and call it clothing. Maybe this is why so many people are adding these to their wardrobes- they’re catching onto the “I can wear a blanket all day” idea. I’ve yet to find a poncho that isn’t super cozy, and they come in so many amazing patterns, colors, styles, and even materials!
Lord & Taylor is a great resource for finding a poncho [or two] to either start your poncho collection or add to your poncho addiction. During their Friends & Family Event [now through 10/23], you can save an extra 30% on almost everything and save 15% on almost all beauty! Whether it’s taking advantage of their buy online pick up in store option, or being a member of their Loyalty Rewards Program, there’s so much to love about Lord & Taylor. And let’s not forget, they carry SO many of my favorite brands [Sam Edelman, Liverpool, Vince Camuto, Spanx, and more!]
Dressing up a Poncho
Lord & Taylor Plaid Wrap [beige/plaid, one size] // French Connection Petra Textured Jersey Sweater Dress [size 2] // Sam Edelman Yaro Leather Ankle-Strap Sandals
First up, we’ve got a look that would be perfect for work or an event! I think we’ve all been in an office environment where it seems like the heat doesn’t get turned on unless it’s below zero. And even then it’s kept to a minimum. A poncho is a great layering piece over traditional office attire on those cold days. Just be sure to keep those base layers fitted, like this dress, to keep things looking polished and not so bulky! Bonus: If after-work drinks happen, you won’t need to worry about throwing on a big coat to keep you warm from car to bar!
Take Your Poncho on a Date

Next, we’re taking our poncho on a date! The right poncho can double as a coat for keeping you warm without adding the extra bulk. I know that when Shawn and I want to go on a date night here in Indiana in the cold months, one of the last things I want to do is throw on a giant jacket to then take it off as soon as we get to a restaurant, and have it drag on the floor on the back of my chair. Quick fix: poncho! I’ve paired this poncho with my favorite pair of moto leggings and heels, and made sure to belt it to keep the outfit looking as sleek as possible. Date night cocktails, here I come!
Whether you’re rocking your poncho out on the town, in the office or my preferred method – on my couch, wear that baby with confidence! Shop today’s post + several other ponchos we are loving from Lord & Taylor and right now!
